My Bali has been attacked again and it's a really saddening moment.
Bali is a land of beauty. Many people think that it is just a tropical island with stretches of white beaches and coconut trees and tourists laying out in the sun. No. Bali is more than that.
Bali has many colours. It has one of the best blue sea in the world. But the sea is not only blue in colour. The underwater gardens hidden by the blue sea offer myriads of creatures with the most vivid and striking colours you can find. It has scenic beaches lined with coconut trees, but the beaches are not only white. In some places it's creamy yellow in others it's exoticly black. The coconut too have many different colours - from green to yellow to golden to brown.
But not only that. Bali has a lot of shades of green, light green from the pretty price fields and darker green from the bushes and forests. The greens are dotted by the gay colours of the flowers. Flowers still growing on trees or those that are offered to the gods along with fruits of different hues.
It is colourful with the vivid hues of the traditional kebaya shirt and sarongs that the ladies wear, and the headdresses of the men. It is cheerful from the bright colours of the dancers and people bringing offerings to the temples in ceremonies.
Bali is golden with its beautiful sunrises and sunsets, which made beautiful dark silhouettes of the artistic temples.
But now Bali is shrouded in dark clouds and it's so sad to see it. Why do people with hate in their hearts have to mar the beauty of this place?

hi stephen, thanks for your kind words. i have a lot of friends in bali whose businesses will surely go down again after this second attack.
i'm not sure I can tell you why they attack indonesia, except from what i have read in the papers.
the masterminds behind the bali 2002, marriott hotel jakarta 2003, australian embassy jakarta 2004 and the recent bali one were thought to be an organisation called JI or Jamaah Islamiyah.
the papers say that this organisation takes their inspiration from Osama bin Laden, but that they have different aspiration. they have this dream of building an islamic superstate covering indonesia, malaysia, the southern phillipines and southern thailand.
the members are people from these countries. the leaders seem to be malaysians mostly, and some indonesians.
why indonesia? i suppose it's because we're the most vulnerable. we're big with 200 millions of people with many many economic and social problems.
eventhough most indonesian moslems are moderate and tolerant (most of my friends and some of my relatives are moslems), some small number of fundamentalists have been gaining fame (or infamy) through their teachings.
we have a lot of hidden economic and social problems and this has proved to be a good ground for recruiting for these small organisations.
and because the country is big and facing different problems of course security is lax compared to the neighbouring countries.
why bali? bali is the number one tourist destination in indonesia. it is predominatly hindu, and it is full of tourists - seen by JI as the representative of western influence in indonesia.
i'm not sure if this explanation is correct but that is what i can gather from reading the many expert analyses in the newspaper.

I agree with you about Bali. Your description is beautiful. I'm so sorry about the terrorists. Why do they want to attack Indonesia?
